Hip and elbow dysplasia in dogs, explained plainly
Dysplasia is the condition owners of larger breeds hear about most and understand least. It is not a diagnosis you make from a photo, and it is not a sentence. It is a joint that does not fit together as tightly as it should, and the day to day question is what you can do about the wear that follows.
What is actually going on
A healthy hip is a ball sitting deep in a socket, held snug so the surfaces glide. In a dysplastic hip the fit is loose, so the ball moves against the rim instead of gliding in it. The body responds the way it responds to any repeated irritation: it lays down extra bone, the joint stiffens, and cartilage wears thin. The elbow version is the same story in a more complicated joint. Breeds commonly prone to it include Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers and the giant breeds, and reputable breeders screen for it before breeding.
What owners actually notice first
Almost nobody notices a limp first. What they notice is a dog who takes a moment longer to get up from a nap, who has started taking the stairs one at a time, or who sits down partway through a walk they used to finish easily. In younger dogs there is often a bunny hop at a run, both back legs moving together instead of alternating. The honest signal is how they move the morning after a big day, not during it, because most dogs will run straight through discomfort while they are excited.
The two things that make the most difference
Body weight is the lever with the clearest evidence behind it and the one entirely under your control. Every extra pound is load through the joint that is already wearing, on every single step. A lean dog with a poorly fitting hip is often comfortable for years longer than a heavy one with the same joint. The second is muscle: steady daily exercise builds the muscle that stabilises the joint, while a sedentary week followed by a hard weekend does the opposite. Neither of these is exciting, and both beat anything you can buy.
Growth matters before anything else does
For a large breed puppy, how fast they grow shapes the joint they will carry for life. Overfeeding a puppy to get size quickly, and repeated high impact landing while the joint is still forming, both work against you. Large breed puppy food exists because the calcium and energy balance is genuinely different, not as marketing. This is the window where prevention is possible at all, and it closes.
When to stop reading and call a vet
A sudden non weight bearing lameness is not dysplasia progressing, it is something acute, and it needs looking at. Steady stiffness that is getting worse over months is worth an appointment because the options genuinely widen the earlier you start. There is a real range of treatment between doing nothing and surgery, including pain management that changes a dog's daily life considerably, and a vet is the only person who can tell you where on that range your dog sits.
Questions owners actually ask
- Can you tell if a dog has hip dysplasia from a photo?
- No. It is diagnosed from x-rays, usually with the dog sedated so the joint can be positioned properly. A photo can tell you the breed is one commonly prone to it, which is a reason to know the signs, not a finding.
- Do joint supplements work?
- The evidence is mixed and much weaker than the marketing suggests. They are unlikely to do harm, and they are not a substitute for keeping a dog lean and well muscled, which is where the clear benefit is. Ask your vet before spending, particularly before spending monthly.
- Should I stop exercising a dog with joint problems?
- Usually the opposite. Muscle supports the joint, and a dog who stops moving loses that support. What normally changes is the shape of the exercise: regular and moderate rather than occasional and explosive. Your vet can tell you what is appropriate for the specific joint.
- Is it always inherited?
- There is a strong inherited component, which is why screening programmes exist and why asking a breeder for hip and elbow scores is reasonable. Growth rate, nutrition and body weight all influence how it develops from there.
